A Couple of Things I Saw a Few Times (2025)

multichannel video installation w/ stereo audio

created by Joseph Bourdeau + Anqi Liu
presented @ "Working Title No.4",
produced by Project [BLANK]
St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, San Diego, California Feb.6-8, 2025

This work presents five channels of prerecorded video materials, synced to stereo audio as a way to examine the moments of everyday beauty that can be found both within and between times of activity. As we forge new memories on aging hardware, it is sometimes surprising what fragments of experience are deemed relevant, and preserved. It is also surprising how the process of storage and recall often distorts memory, creating images which can be hazy, idealized, or otherwise unrealistic. This work uses video footage of both rare and recurring experiences to explore the artists’ experience of memory, as well as the ways in which the mundane or private rituals of daily life can provide seeds for larger, more abstract experiences.

A Couple of Things I Saw A Few Times uses five channels of synchronized video, each with its own channel of stereo audio.
These audio/video tracks are played back on three 4:3 standard-definition screens, along with two 16:9 HD flatscreens, arranged in a tight cluster.

The video materials are synchronized to an additional channel of stereo audio, played back on a pair of speakers positioned behind the televisions.

video by Joseph Bourdeau

The material played on these speakers is a pre-recorded modular synth improvisation by Anqi Liu, which responds to the raw sound present in each video track.

All video was shot + processed by Joseph Bourdeau + Anqi Liu.
